API access requires a Scale plan (Observe Scale or Ask Scale). Generating an API key requires Account Owner permissions on the Hotjar organization. Keys auto-expire after 1 year and cannot be extended — generate a new key before expiry.

Generate a Hotjar API key

Hotjar API keys are issued as a Client ID and Client Secret pair generated from the Hotjar account settings.

1

Sign in to Hotjar

Sign in to your Hotjar account.

  • In the top-right corner, click your avatar.
  • Select Account from the dropdown menu.
  • In the left sidebar, click API.
2

Generate a new API key for the StackOne integration.

  • Click Create API key.
  • Enter a name (e.g., StackOne Integration).

3

Copy the credentials

A dialog displays the Client ID and Client Secret. The Client Secret is shown only once — copy it immediately.

  • Copy the Client ID value and store it securely.
  • Copy the Client Secret value and store it securely.
  • Important: If you close the dialog without copying the Client Secret, you will need to regenerate the API key.
